The West Long Branch Historical Society is an outgrowth of the Borough's Historical Commission that was appointed by Mayor Shaheen in 1975 and was charged with arranging the Borough's observation of the U.S. Bicentennal in 1976. The Society was officially incorporated in 1999.

The major function of the Historical Society is to discover and collect any material which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the borough; its exploration, settlement, development and activities, its progress in population, wealth, education, arts, trade and transportation. The Society is open to anyone interested in preserving the historic heritage of the Borough.
